What year did Little Darcy launch?
We opened in March, 2013.
How did the name ‘Little Darcy’ come about? Is there a special meaning behind it?
‘Darcy’ is my family name. As a kid, I was often in the same cricket and football team as my older brother; he was known as ‘Big Darcy’, and I was ‘Little Darcy’. My daughter, Charlotte, is now my Little Darcy. Also, my wife’s clothing and accessories shop is called ‘Mr. Darcy’ – the name inspired by the character, Mr. Darcy, from Pride & Prejudice.
What inspired you to start a business in kids’ fashion?
My first store, Pomegranate, is a gift and homeware shop. When I started this business back in 1999, kids’ products were only a small part of what was being offered, as there weren’t many kids’ items available in the market at the time. It’s only been recently that a lot of design energy have been going into kids’ stuff, especially children's fashion. As a relatively new Dad, I began noticing a diverse range of amazing kids’ products presented at trade shows – which was what eventually prompted me to think of ways to try and fit all of its goodness into Pomegranate. The answer to that momentous ponder was: I needed to open a new store. And, that was how Little Darcy was born.
What do you think makes Little Darcy different to other children’s clothing stores?
We buy what we love, we keep things fun, and we offer good services at a great value – but, I think the real point of difference is that we are a part of an amazing Coventry Street retail community (Melbourne, Australia). Our street opens up an amazing shopping experience, along with the South Melbourne Market sitting right around the corner from us, offering world class services and an endless range of mouth-watering foods. Coventry Street is the perfect place to enjoy a day out with friends and family!
How would you say Huxbaby’s range adds to your store?
When I opened Little Darcy, I had a vision of creating a fun edgy kids’ store. Huxbaby's design instantly appealed to me – they are for sure innovators in children’s apparel. In addition to the unique elements of their seasonal collection, Huxbaby represents quality – a factor that’s highly valued by my customers.
Was there anything you’d like to say to your customers and our Hux Readers?
I've been retailing on Coventry Street for 18 years, and feel incredibly privileged to have shared so many precious moments with my customers. I've watched families grow – seeing kids become parents and parents become grandparents. I feel very lucky to have been a long term member of such a great community – thank you!
And, to your Aussie Hux fans who have never visited Little Darcy, I’d love to have you visit the store sometime! Not only am I proud of Little Darcy, I also belong to an amazing neighbourhood that’s filled with hardworking independent retailers, who offer a truly unique shopping experience.
